Iraqi Prime Minister calls for reconciliation with Saddam's allies
(RTTNews) - Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki called on his countrymen to forgive and reconcile with the henchmen of slain dictator Saddam Hussein.
Addressing a meeting of tribal leaders in Baghdad Friday, the Iraqi leader demanded that the former Saddam allies "come back to us and turn the page on that dark part of Iraq's history."
A reconciliation conference in Baghdad with Bani Wail, an Iraqi Shiite tribe, was organized as a part of the campaign to rebuild the country and its laws by entrusting tribal councils help partner tribes with the Iraqi government..
Maliki, a Shiite leader and former opposition member who fled Iraq during Saddam's rule, was sentenced to death in absentia.
Iraq had passed law to ease restrictions on former members of Saddam's banned Baath party.
Many former officials and henchmen of Saddam, including his cousin Chemical Ali, were sentenced to death or life for slayings and abuses against Shiites under the former President's regime.
